This is especially true for the difference in their bodies. A substantial difference between sexes is due the way hormones affect the balance between muscle and fat. In men, the hormone testosterone determines the size of bones, controls the muscle mass, and regulates the metabolism.

Muscle tissue is very active and requires a lot of calories to maintain. Muscle tissue burns roughly 10 to 15 calories per pound, per day, just to maintain itself. More muscle mass means that the calories are burnt faster. So generally, men lose weight faster than women do simply because their bodies burn more fat.

Another interesting fact, women are predisposed to store and retain fat. Again those damn hormones! Women have higher levels of estrogen, a hormone that works to keep the fat on a woman’s body. That means it is harder for women to lose weight. Women have to work twice as hard as men to stay fit, and since this is no easy task for men, you can imagine how bad times the ladies have it.

The thing that makes it even worse for the ladies is the modern obsession with a thin body. Celebrity women are thinner than ever it seems. And too many women want to be just like these extremely thin celebrities. As a result, a lot of women will try to take dieting as the last resort. But you must know that repeated attempts to drop the extra pounds teach the body to hang on to the existing fat and so weight loss becomes harder and harder as the years pass.

That’s why it is a bad idea to starve yourself to try and lose weight. The importance of muscle for long term health cannot be overstated. Just starving yourself and becoming thin does not mean that you are healthy. You should combine a healthy diet with an exercise routine in order to successfully lose weight.

Everyone loses weight differently, and genes, along with hormones, play a large role in how quickly some people lose weight. Therefore, when it comes to weight loss, keep in mind that it’s best to avoid comparing yourself to others, whether male or female.
