Grapefruit Diet – Does It Work?
The Grapefruit Diet is a weight loss diet that were really popular back in the 1930s and 1980s. This diet is based on the premise that grapefruit has fat burning properties. The grapefruit diet has always been discounted by experts as fad diet, dangerously unbalanced or simply unable to deliver on its promises.
However, one recent study carried out by a team of scientists led by Doctor Ken Fujioka, from the Nutrition and Metabolic Research Center of the Scripps Clinic in San Diego, has found that contrary to the opinions voiced by experts in the 1980s, adding grapefruit and grapefruit juice to your diet can actually help you lose weight. According to the study, eating half a grapefruit before each meal and exercising a bit every day helped a group of obese people drop an average 3.6 pounds in 12 weeks without any change in their eating habits whatsoever. A second group had to drink a glass of grapefruit juice before every meal and lost 3.3 pounds in the same 12 weeks. However, some patients in the study lost more than 10 pounds. The researchers speculate that the chemical properties of grapefruit reduce insulin levels and encourage weight loss.
Grapefruit is fat-free and has about 70 calories, which means that you can eat about as much as you can stomach and still lose weight. Grapefruits are also rich in Vitamin C, Beta-carotene and antioxidants. Grapefruit reduce cholesterol and promotes heart health.
The Grapefruit Diet is basically an eating plan that focuses on the consumption of grapefruit before each meal. You could lose weight by eating a half of a grapefruit before breakfast, lunch and dinner. Eat grapefruit whenever you can or drink a glass of unsweetened grapefruit juice.
The best thing about the Grapefruit Diet is you don’t have to change your eating habits. Of course, eating less fat and sweets and doing some exercises is a very good way of speeding up the weight loss process, but it’s not a must with Grapefruit Diet.
Most of the people on Grapefruit Diet will shed approximately 1 pound every month. Well, it is not much, but you have to appreciate a diet that lets you eat whatever you like and still lose a pound per month. It could be the slowest diet ever, but if you don’t need to lose weight fast, you could give a try to Grapefruit Diet.
